Painting of Florence Nightingale at Scutari hospital

Florence Nightingale & Mary Seacole

Last updated: 5 September 2011

Workshop

In this workshop your students will have the opportunity to discover more about the lives of these two significant women, and how they improved the lives of soldiers in the Crimean War.

Your Museum teacher will facilitate questioning and discussion within the group, enabling them to explore the Museum’s rich and unique collection of portraits, paintings, historic photographs and drawings from the period, to reveal more about the conditions of the soldiers, their stories and the challenging environment in which these women worked.

Following in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale, students will handle replica objects which would have been found in the hospitals at Scutari and Balaklava. Inspired by Mary Seacole, they will also investigate healthy eating and try their hand at mixing simple herbal remedies.
