Soldiers' Stories: Life in the First and Second World Wars

Last updated: 5 September 2011

Workshop

Are you looking to give context to your studies of wartime and to find out what soldiers experienced? Do you want to explore some of the key changes that occurred during the World Wars?

The National Army Museum has a vast collection of photographs, posters, paintings and archives, uniforms and handling objects, many of which were owned, used and made by soldiers themselves.

Using a combination of whole-group discussion and small-group investigation, this workshop session will encourage students to explore some of the key questions:

  • Who were the men and women who served?
  • What jobs did they do?
  • Where did they come from, and where did they go?
  • What was it like to be a soldier?
  • What did they wear?
  • What equipment did they use?

Plenty of time is allowed for object handling and questions.

if you are looking to focus on just one of the World Wars, this workshop can be tailored to suit.

And why not book a visit to War Horse: Fact & Fiction to enhance your visit?

Gallery highlights

Our World Wars gallery on Level 2 covers one floor of the Museum. Come face to face with a recruiting sergeant, then find:

  • A wide variety of mannequins in landscapes to give your students an idea of uniforms and different battlefield conditions in the World Wars.
  • A life-size replica section of a First World War trench, which you can explore.
  • Interactive exhibits to put your knowledge to the test.
  • A variety of personal stories, medals and mementoes from both wars.
  • A selection of handling objects and uniforms to try on.
  • A hands-on Action Zone covering the two World Wars.

To make the most of your time in the galleries, a pre-visit is highly recommended. Remember, entry to the Museum is free.
