Stories of Remembrance

Last updated: 5 September 2011

Workshop

More than 1.2 million men and women from all over the British Empire died in the two World Wars. Millions more were wounded. This workshop uses the Museum’s rich collection of images, objects and uniforms to inspire discussion and small group investigation with handling objects and archive material.

Students will uncover the stories of some of the individuals who served. They will develop a growing understanding of and empathy with the experiences of these individuals during war, and how their loss was felt and commemorated by family and community.

The session will also include some discussion of soldiers serving in more recent conflicts, to explore how remembrance is understood today.

To end the session your class will make a wreath for Remembrance, and lay it on one of the Museum’s war memorials. The wreath can be taken back to school as a focus for further work.

Gallery highlights

Our World Wars gallery on Level 2 covers one floor of the Museum. Come face to face with a recruiting sergeant, then find:

  • A life-size replica section of a First World War trench, which you can explore.
  • A wide variety of mannequins in landscapes to give your students an idea of uniforms and different battlefield conditions in the World Wars.
  • A selection of handling objects and uniforms to try on.
  • A hands-on Action Zone covering the two World Wars.

If you wish to explore more contemporary conflicts, the Conflicts of Interest gallery is situated on Level 3. Please note that some content may not be appropriate for all children.

To make the most of your time in the galleries, a pre-visit is highly recommended. Remember, entry to the Museum is free.

Kids' Zone

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 school groups can book our new Kids’ Zone in advance from 12.30pm to 1.30pm on weekdays.
