Presentation and handling
Build your own First World War day with a combination of talk, workshop, live interpretation and gallery visit.
- The taught presentation uses a range of textual, visual and artefact sources from the Museum’s Collection as historical evidence to explore a range of themes. These include the significance of events, uniform, weaponry, technology, tactics, the life of the ordinary soldier, the role of women, medical care and remembrance.
- In the workshop students learn and practise rifle drill, and explore the Department’s extensive handling collection of revolvers, machine guns, webbing, equipment, uniform, medals and memorial plaques.
- In the live interpretation students cross-examine a volunteer infantry private. Other options include an officer, a member of the WAAC (Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps), a pilot or a cavalry trooper.
- The World Wars gallery features original weaponry, armour and artefacts from the Museum’s Collection.
From November 2011, and for one year only, you can also book a visit to War Horse: Fact & Fiction. Talk to us about adapting your Education day to include this exciting new special exhibition.
