My father served throughout

My father served throughout the Second World War with most of the time in North Africa attached to the Armoured brigade. He said that "It was a good thing Hitler kept playing about with Rommel otherwise we could all have finished up in the Suez Canal. But when Monty came on the scene - he was the boy - wouldn't move until whe was ready, never mind what Whitehall said " ! Dad spoke it as it was.

If he had not been injured in

If he had not been injured in Normandy and implicated in the plot against Hitler, things could have been very different.

A brilliant tactician who

A brilliant tactician who acheived great results with limited resources and a charismatic leader whose fame struck fear and terror in the hears of his opponents. Remember what Churchill said - Nothing matters except beating Rommel! Its an awful pity that he is not getting the recognition he deserves in this poll - does anyone know how votes can be mobilised in his favour?

There's a story (perhaps

There's a story (perhaps apocryphal) that during Alamein, Rommel inspected a Allied field hospital and no-one said anything, they were so surprised! Had he not been badly injured in a strafing run shortly before D-Day the outcome of D-Day may have been significantly different.

Had his country provided him

Had his country provided him with what he wanted and left him alone to accomplish the mission the outcome of the great war would have been far different.

I'm bemused by Rommel making

I'm bemused by Rommel making the list and by comments about him (and the same applies here to Bonaparte). Surely the nomination of the greatest foe must have some relationship to that generals strategic success? Is Clausewitz' aphorism that 'war is policy by other means' forgotten or is this poll merely for war gamers and nationalists... Rommel failed in North Africa and in Western Europe. The polity he fought for was totally destroyed and his and all German armies beaten- despite their tactical and human strengths.

Ataturks a bit hard to judge as he lost his war but perhaps attained his goals (with a fair bit of hindsight). His support in this poll however seems Turkocentric and nationalist not analytical. The big surprise is the low ranking of Washington. He emerged from the humblest of strategic positions, compreheively beat the British (the strategic superpower of the day) with his rag tag Continental Army. This victory led (in time) to the creation of the most powerful nation and armed force the world has ever known - despite a terrible tendency to over stretch. Any logic must have him the leader by a significant number!

My uncle Jack flew with the RAF in N Africa, my Granddad fought at the Somme. Doing our bit is clearly a family tradition. Tactically, the German army in whatever guise has caused greatest concern. As a manifestation of that, Erwin Rommel has to be the greatest threat as enemy commander. Waxing lyrical about Monty is as daft as voting for Collins. SP Limerick

Rommel has to be a serious

Rommel has to be a serious contender surprised that more people haven't voted for him. With a much smaller army he ran rings around the allies who were more numerous in men and supplies, its no wonder Montgomery was cautious and only made his move when he was sure he had the edge not just in numbers but also tactically any mistake would have been fatal not just for Britain but for the free world also. I had to vote for Collins though i considered giving Rommel first vote.
