Following on from Britain’s Greatest General in 2011, the National Army Museum is conducting a new poll to find Britain’s Greatest Foe. We have selected some of the most outstanding military commanders ever to face the British. Now it’s up to you to decide who comes out on top.
This online exhibition provides you with some essential facts about the figures in our 20-strong shortlist, featuring quotes, portraits and brief biographies.
The aim of the poll is to highlight the achievements of Britain’s most celebrated enemies, but also to draw attention to some of our lesser-known adversaries. In assembling the shortlist our main criterion was that each commander must have led a force against the British in the field of battle. However, our selection also demonstrates the global nature of the British Army's deployments throughout the ages.
The online voting has now closed. The top five commanders - Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Michael Collins, Erwin Rommel, Napoleon Bonaparte and George Washington - will now go forward to be represented at an all-day celebrity speaker event on Saturday 14 April 2012. Only the votes registered at this live event will count towards the naming of Britain’s Greatest Foe.
