The current British engagement in Afghanistan began in October 2001 following the terrorist attacks on the United States. As part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the British assisted in the overthrow of the Taleban regime and the campaign against Al Qaeda which used Afghanistan as a safe haven and training ground. Today, British forces continue to work with the Afghan government and army to build stability and maintain security across the country.
The number and ferocity of the attacks they have experienced have surprised many soldiers. In Helmand Province they have found themselves fighting over the same ground again and again.
‘The Taleban are ready for a fight... When they attack they do it with ferocity, and they mean it...they’ll keep going till the last man goes down... You’ve got to respect them really.’
