Short Visits

Short on time? Self-guided tours are available to help you make the most of your visit, when you haven’t time to walk around all our floors, or when you feel like something different. Past gallery tours have included animals, heroes and icons from our collection. Although most of the objects on these three trails are no longer on display in the galleries, they can still be viewed online.

Animals

Army animals have worked side by side with soldiers in the British Army across the centuries. Horses, dogs, cats, pigeons, camels and elephants are among the feathered and furred friends you’ll find on this tour.

Heroes

Heroes

Follow the path of heroes. Discover the stories of some of the soldiers who have won the Victoria Cross, the most famous award for bravery in the world, for their valour in the face of the enemy, and the equally remarkable soldiers who have won the George Cross for acts of heroism outside of wartime. This tour marks 150 years of the Victoria Cross, and Veterans’ Day 2006.

Find some of the most inspiring objects we have, selected by Museum curators. A French Eagle captured at Waterloo, the order that launched the Charge of the Light Brigade, the first Victoria Cross, Florence Nightingale's lantern, a photograph of the 1914 Christmas Truce and Hitler’s telephone exchange, are all among the Icons that can be seen at the National Army Museum. The stories that they tell are breathtaking.
