‘Raggie’ the real war horse

Fifty years before Michael Morpurgo immortalised the story of ‘Joey’, another war horse put pen to paper and told his story – ‘Raggie’, the War Horse: An Autobiography.

Raggie, the War Horse

Told from the ‘horse’s mouth’ of a handsome Arab pony named Ragtime or ‘Raggie’, this charming autobiography gives an insider’s account of the horses who went to war and what they experienced during the First World War and beyond.

To celebrate and share this remarkable story, the National Army Museum has digitised the whole book, making it available for everyone to read and enjoy for the first time ever on the Museum’s website.

So, if you are chomping at the bit to discover more about Raggie, come and flick through the pages of his autobiography on our main website.
