The lecture will explore the British public's reactions to the three major wars the nation was involved in between 1854 and 1918. The Crimean, Boer and Great Wars were all widely reported to and avidly followed by an increasingly literate and politically aware home front. A range of written and visual primary sources will be examined in an attempt to uncover popular attitudes to these crises of Britain's imperial mission.
Peter Donaldson is a lecturer in the School of History at the University of Kent. His main research interest is in the field of war, memory and commemoration. He is currently working on a study of the commemoration of the Second South African War.
