The National Army Museum has announced the appointment of Steve Miller MBE as its new Director. He will take up the role in early 2027, succeeding Justin Maciejewski DSO MBE, who stepped down after more than eight years leading the Museum.
Steve is currently the Director of Norfolk Museums Service, one of the largest county museum services in the UK. The Service operates 10 award-winning museums across Norfolk, including Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse and Time and Tide Museum of Great Yarmouth Life. In partnership with the Trustees of the Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum, the Service also cares for the Royal Norfolk Regimental Collections, which are on permanent display at Norwich Castle.
Under Steve’s leadership, Norfolk Museums Service delivered the major 'Royal Palace Reborn' project, which saw the redevelopment of the Grade I-listed Norwich Castle Keep following a significant grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and support from Norfolk County Council and others. Following the completion of the project, it was awarded Restoration Project of the Year at the Museums + Heritage Awards 2026 and was named one of five finalists for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2026, the world’s largest museum prize. The Castle has been visited by more than 300,000 people in the year since it reopened.
Prior to working in Norfolk, Steve was Chief Executive of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, one of the largest independent museums in the UK (2006–13), and Director of Norton Priory Museum Trust in Cheshire (2001–06). He brings more than 25 years of senior leadership experience across the museum and heritage sector.
A member of the National Museum Directors' Council since 2012, Steve is currently President of the Museums Association and a former Trustee of the National Lottery Heritage Fund (2014–20). He is a Cultural Leadership Fellow of Nesta (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts).
Throughout his career, Steve has worked closely with tourism partners and is presently a Board Member of Visit East of England, the Local Visitor Economy Partnership for Norfolk and Suffolk.
He was awarded an MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to heritage and tourism.
Lieutenant General Sir Simon Mayall KBE CB, Chair of the National Army Museum, said:
'We are delighted to announce Steve Miller as the Museum’s next Director. He brings a wealth of experience in leading museums and cultural organisations, alongside a strong understanding of the sector and the importance of building partnerships.
'Steve joins us at an exciting time for the Museum. Our partnership with the Lord Ashcroft Medal Collection will bring the world’s largest collection of Victoria Crosses and George Crosses to Chelsea, while our wider plans for the development of the Museum will create new opportunities to share the stories of soldiers and their service with audiences. I am confident Steve will build on the Museum’s achievements and help us realise these ambitions when he joins us early next year.
'I would also like to thank Justin Maciejewski for his leadership of the Museum over the past eight years, and Dr Glyn Prysor for his leadership as Interim Director. I am delighted that Glyn will continue as Deputy Director, working alongside Steve to take these plans forward.'
Steve Miller MBE, incoming Director of the National Army Museum, said:
'The National Army Museum has an outstanding reputation for bringing the history of the British Army to life through the stories of those who have served. Its collections, exhibitions and programmes play an important role in helping people understand the Army's place in our history and its relevance today.
'I am particularly passionate about the Museum's role in supporting military museums and collections across the UK, and the opportunities to develop this network and share expertise more widely.
'It is a privilege to be joining the Museum at such an exciting time. I look forward to working with Council, staff, volunteers and partners to build on its achievements and take forward its ambitions for the future.'
