Drawn on the Western Front: British Sign Language Tour

Follow expert guide Edward Richards on a British Sign Language (BSL) tour of our exhibition ‘Drawn on the Western Front: Paul Sarrut and the Indian Army’.

The First World War gave artists serving in uniform the opportunity to observe aspects of military life they might otherwise never have encountered. One such example is the French artist Paul Sarrut, who served as a liaison officer and interpreter with British, French and Indian units on the Western Front.

Sarrut created an important visual record of the diverse armies fighting in France, particularly the Indian soldiers of the 3rd (Lahore) Division. He also spent time sketching the British soldiers and officers he served alongside.

On this guided gallery tour, Edward Richards will explore how Sarrut's work illuminates daily life in camps, billets and medical stations, offering a vivid insight into the wartime experiences of the soldiers he portrayed.
