Embroidery Course: Poppies

Earl Haig Fund poppy lapel badge, c1930
Elevate your embroidery skills on this two-day course, inspired by the Museum’s collection and led by experts from Hand & Lock, London’s premier embroidery house.

The poppy has been a symbol of remembrance for over a century. In that time, it has been used as an emblem of loss, love, art and creativity.

On this special weekend course, take inspiration from the historic poppies in our collection and develop your own embroidery skills under the specialist supervision of Lucy Martin from Hand & Lock.

Attendees will learn traditional stumpwork embroidery techniques including: design transfer, how to create beautiful silk shading blending between stitches, how to create 3D shapes with wire, how to create wrapped stems, and lots more!

Programme

Day 1 - Saturday 2 November

10.00am – 4.30pm

In the morning, a curator will highlight the history of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and will present some of the historic poppies that form part of the National Army Museum’s collection. Lucy Martin, a specialist from Hand & Lock, will then discuss the techniques used in the embroidery.

After lunch, you'll take part in an embroidery class and have a go at a design inspired by the items you've seen.

Day 2 - Sunday 3 November

10.00am – 4.30pm

On the second day, you’ll continue to work on your design in our embroidery class.
