The 1600s were a time of profound change and unrest that set the foundations for the British Army. The Museum’s collection from this period features portraits of leading figures from the Civil Wars, the early development of battlefield painting and the role of art as propaganda.

About the guide

Anna Lavelle is an art curator at the National Army Museum and the principal curator of its works on paper. Her research focuses on print culture, visual dissemination and the representation of military identity. She is the lead curator of the new exhibition ‘Drawn on the Western Front’, which explores the work of French artist Paul Sarrut during the First World War.
