Founded by two former soldiers in 1988, and now with 12,000 staff in 30 countries, The Halo Trust is the world’s largest non-governmental organisation (NGO) tackling the scourge of conflict. From Ukraine to Afghanistan and from the Middle East to South East Asia, Halo does dangerous work in dangerous places.
Join Major General James Cowan, CEO of The Halo Trust, as he discusses the charity's multifaceted work. As well as clearing victim-operated weapons, such as landmines, improvised explosive devices and cluster munitions, the charity now undertakes a larger body of work controlling command-operated weapon systems.
Major General Cowan will illustrate how, through this vital work, Halo can provide unrivalled insights into an increasingly violent world.
Major General James Cowan commanded his battlegroup in Iraq and was commander Task Force Helmand in Afghanistan. He was Head of Counter Terrorism in the Ministry of Defence and, in his final job in the Army, commanded the 3rd (UK) Division. Since leaving the Army, he has grown The Halo Trust by four times, navigating the turmoil of the Afghan evacuation, the Ukraine war and now the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
