When the First World War drew to a close in 1918, leaders and military commanders had the opportunity to consider what the armies of the future would look like. For the cavalry, this brought about a drastic change from men on horseback to men behind the wheels of mechanised vehicles. 

In this revealing talk, Dick Taylor will highlight the often-painful process of reducing the size of the British regular cavalry through a series of amalgamations, and then the tortuous process of converting them to armoured cars and tanks prior to the Second World War.

Dick Taylor joined the Army at the age of 16. He served in the Royal Tank Regiment for the entirety of his military career, eventually retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel. Since then, he has written extensively on British tanks and is the official historian of the Royal Armoured Corps.
