Coronavirus update

The National Army Museum will be closed to the public from 18 March until further notice following the latest government guidance in response to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin at the Potsdam Conference, 1945
Andrew Roberts examines the careers of nine major wartime leaders, comparing their individual approaches, traits and techniques.

In his latest book, celebrated historian Andrew Roberts explores the lives of nine titans of modern history: Napoleon Bonaparte, Horatio Nelson, Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, George C Marshall, Charles de Gaulle, Dwight D Eisenhower and Margaret Thatcher.

All nine leaders played a crucial role in shaping the outcome of conflicts involving their nation, from the French Revolutionary Wars to the Falklands.

Each wished to succeed. But what qualities are needed to secure a victory? By comparing the careers of these leaders, Roberts explores how their traits and techniques aligned and differed. Did they have something in common? Or was their war leadership unique?
