Alan Francis Brooke (later 1st Viscount Alanbrooke) had a long and prestigious military career. Beginning his service in the Royal Artillery during the First World War (1914-18), he is perhaps best known for his crucial role in the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk in 1940.

By the end of the Second World War (1939-45), he had been appointed Chief of the Imperial General Staff and promoted to the rank of field marshal. Yet, despite his wartime achievements, he remains a relatively unsung hero, especially when compared to contemporary figures like Churchill and Montgomery.
