Virtual Battlefield Tour: Salamanca

Witness the battlefield at Salamanca like never before in this special virtual tour led by Peninsular War expert Patrick Mercer and battlefield guide Dan Hill.

Fought in Spain on 22 July 1812, the Battle of Salamanca was a pivotal moment both in the Peninsular War and in the wider struggle for supremacy in Europe.

Lieutenant-General Arthur Wellesley (the Earl of Wellington at the time) had been seeking an advantageous opportunity to engage Marshal Marmont’s French force. His victory at Salamanca - described by some as the destruction of 40,000 men in 40 minutes - helped cement Wellington’s reputation as a master of both offensive and defensive operations, and shattered French dominance on the Iberian Peninsula.

This virtual tour, led by Patrick Mercer, will use a blend of the latest technology and original artefacts to take you on the ground and explore the battlefield like never before.

Research curators will introduce items from the National Army Museum’s world-class collection to illustrate the story and bring the events of the battle to life.

Event format

This event will be delivered online in partnership with Battle Guide Virtual Tours.

The livestream will begin 15 minutes ahead of the advertised start time. The tour will then last for approximately 75 minutes, followed by 15 minutes for questions.
