Army Life in Germany: Virtual Tour

Find out what it was like to live and serve with the British Army in Germany in this virtual guided tour of our special exhibition.

More than a million British soldiers and their families have lived and served in Germany over the last 75 years.

The everyday experiences of these people - whether at work, rest or play - is at the heart of our exhibition ‘Foe to Friend: The British Army in Germany since 1945’.

In this special virtual tour, the exhibition’s lead curator, Dr Peter Johnston, will talk you through some of the key objects that illustrate this story, from Soxmis cards to school uniforms, boiling vessels to yellow handbags.

For those who served in Germany, the tour will be a trip down memory lane. For those wanting to learn about this vital period of the Army’s recent history, it will provide a fascinating insight into the daily lives of soldiers serving with the British Army of the Rhine.

The tour will be available to watch on this page from 12pm (noon) on Thursday 18 March. It will last approximately 15 minutes and will be followed by a live Q&A session with Dr Peter Johnston.
