The Battle of Messines

Leaving for a night raid at Messines into the inky darkness of No Man's Land, 1917

John Sadler examines the impact of new tactics used during this significant First World War battle.

The Battle of Messines began 100 years ago, marking a turning point on the Western Front. John looks at how lessons learnt from the Battle of the Somme, led the British to victory. He will also explore how new artillery tactics, detailed planning and training, and the extensive use of mines, produced a dramatic and successful outcome.

John Sadler is a historian who has been writing and teaching about the Western Front for nearly 30 years.
