Embroidering Identity: Goldwork

Goldwork embroidered on a military uniform
Elevate your embroidery skills in this exclusive two-day course led by experts from Hand & Lock, London’s premier embroidery house.

For centuries, many of the British Army's ceremonial uniforms have been beautifully embroidered with goldwork. Learn how to elevate your own embroidery skills in this special weekend course led by tutors from Hand & Lock.

By the end of the weekend, you'll have covered the techniques of cutwork, padding, pearl purl, appliqué, thread work and French knots.

Day 1 - Saturday 15 September

10.00am – 4.30pm

In the morning, a curator will show you some fine examples of goldwork from the National Army Museum’s collection, explaining their historic significance. A representative from Hand & Lock will then discuss the techniques used in the embroidery.

After lunch, you'll take part in an embroidery class and have a go at a design inspired by the items you've seen.

Day 2 - Sunday 16 September

10.00am – 4.30pm

On the second day, you'll continue to work on your design in our embroidery class, before taking home the finished product.
