Embroidery Course: Silk Shading

Guidon, Ringwood Light Dragoons, c1802

Master the art of silk shading on this two-day course led by experts from Hand & Lock, London’s premier embroidery house.

For centuries, British military uniforms and equipment have been embroidered with elaborate and meaningful designs. Elevate your own embroidery skills and uncover the art of silk shading in this special weekend course led by tutors from Hand & Lock.

Silk shading, also known as painting with thread, is perhaps the most artistic embroidery skill one can master. On this course, students will learn how to blend coloured threads to bring depth and realism to their work.

The intricately embroidered florals adorning some of the military uniforms, colours and soldier needlework pieces in the National Army Museum’s collection will provide the perfect inspiration.

The course is suitable for beginners.

Day 1 - Saturday 22 July

10.00am – 4.30pm

In the morning, a curator will show you some fine examples of embroidery from the National Army Museum’s collection, explaining their historic significance. A representative from Hand & Lock will then discuss the techniques used in the embroidery.

After lunch, you'll take part in an embroidery class and have a go at a design inspired by the items you've seen.

Day 2 - Sunday 23 July

10.00am – 4.30pm

On the second day, you'll continue to work on your design in our embroidery class, before taking home the finished product.
