Embroidery Course: Sweetheart Pin Cushions

Elevate your embroidery skills in this exclusive two-day course led by experts from Hand & Lock, London’s premier embroidery house.

Crafts have been an important source of entertainment and relaxation for soldiers throughout the Army’s history. Many embroidered items sent as gifts between soldiers and their loved ones have ended up in the National Army Museum’s collection.

In this special weekend course, learn how to elevate your embroidery skills with tutors from Hand & Lock, taking your inspiration from sweetheart pin cushions held at the Museum.

Schedule

Day 1 – Saturday, 18 February 2023

10.00am – 4.30pm

In the morning, a curator will show you some fine examples of soldiers’ embroidery from the National Army Museum’s collection, explaining their historic significance. A representative from Hand & Lock will then discuss some of the techniques used.

After lunch, you’ll take part in an embroidery class and have a go at a design inspired by the items you’ve seen.

Day 2 – Sunday, 19 February 2023

10.00am – 4.30pm

On the second day, you’ll continue to work on your design in our embroidery class, before taking home the finished product.

By the end of the weekend, you’ll have learnt the techniques of cutwork, padding, pear purl, applique, thread work and French knots.
