Gender and violence: Picturing the woman warrior

Hannah Snell, The Female Soldier. Engraving by G Scott

Join Dr Sue Malvern as she traces the history of female fighters depicted in art, from the Amazons to the present day.

Throughout history, war and fighting have been associated with men. However, women have always been involved in fighting.

From the Amazons to contemporary artistic representations of military women, Sue will look back at the history of female fighters, showing that the woman warrior has an undeniable place in artistic imagery over time.

Dr Sue Malvern is a professor and author, specialising in modern and contemporary art, and war and gender.
