Military Medicine and Recovery

Speak to soldiers and medics at the National Army Museum and gain a fresh insight into military medicine and the support available to those who have served.

Our temporary exhibition Road to Recovery explores the journey of recovery and rehabilitation that soldiers go through after suffering a life-changing physical or mental injury.

In this Spotlight event, learn about the importance of military medicine and see how the Army and charities play an essential role in the rehabilitation process of service personnel.

Programme

Medicine Through Time

10.00am - 4.00pm

Embark on a journey through time and see how different injuries and wounds were treated. Hear from a Civil War surgeon, a First World War medical officer and others on this interactive trail.

Field Ambulance station

10.00am - 4.00pm

Meet members of 256 (City of London) Field Hospital as they talk about the work they do in supporting the British Army. Get hands on with some of the equipment and techniques they use today. And even see what it was like to operate a 1970s field ambulance.

Johnson Beharry VC

2.00pm - 3.00pm

Hear from Colour Sergeant Johnson Beharry VC as he shares stories of his Army service and discusses his personal journey of recovery following injuries sustained in the line of duty.

Rehab and Repair

12.00pm - 1.00pm

Join a panel of experts from the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre as they discuss their personal experiences of caring for and supporting those in recovery. The panellists will also be with us throughout the day, demonstrating some of the equipment and activities they use in their work.

Waterloo Uncovered

10.00am - 4.00pm

Find out about the crucial work of Waterloo Uncovered, a charity that uses archaeology to help improve the lives of veterans and serving military personnel. For six years, they have brought a diverse team of world-class archaeologists, university staff, veterans and serving soldiers together to create new insights not only into the historic battlefield of Waterloo but also into the experiences of today’s servicemen and women.

Medical Gallery Tours

10.45am - 11.15am and 11.30am - 12.00pm

Join a member of our families team as we explore the gory, gruesome and surprising world of army medicine. Get up close and personal with some weird and wonderful objects in this interactive family friendly tour

Sister Evelyn Morgan

2.00pm - 2.20pm and 3.00pm - 3.20pm

Meet Sister Evelyn Morgan, a nurse who has recently arrived in France as part of the 1944 Normandy Landings. Listen as she prepares a field hospital and gets ready to treat wounded soldiers.
