About the Museum
The National Army Museum is the national home of the Army’s history and heritage.
Through our galleries, exhibitions, collections and programmes, we explore how soldiers have shaped our lives and world. Their stories help us to understand today’s society and tomorrow’s challenges.
Purpose
Be the national home of the history and heritage of the Army.
Mission
Engage and inspire everyone with the stories of our soldiers and how their service shapes our world: past, present and future.
Vision
Share the history and heritage of our soldiers and their service in the Army, across the globe and down the centuries. Through our collections, we explore the history of the Army from its origins to the present day.
What we do
The National Army Museum collects, preserves and shares the history of the Army and the soldiers who have served in it. Our work spans centuries and continents, from the British Civil Wars to the Army’s role today.
This includes:
- Permanent galleries and special exhibitions
- Caring for the world’s leading collection relating to the Army and its people
- Educational programmes for schools, families and lifelong learners
- Hosting talks, tours and public programmes
- Providing access to our collections and showcasing the latest in new research
- Digital content access to the Army’s history
All our work is guided by a commitment to accuracy, insight and public benefit.
Our values
Integrity
We build trust with audiences by sharing history that is accurate, accessible and authentic.
Teamwork
We work collaboratively towards shared goals, creating a culture where everyone contributes to success.
Respect
We treat our collections with care and respect to ensure soldiers’ stories are shared responsibly – and we treat those within and outside the organisation with the same respect.
Empathy
We act with empathy – towards staff, visitors, the Army and our collections. History is understood within its context, and stories are communicated with care and sensitivity.
Inclusivity
We are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels welcome, valued and able to thrive. Staff are supported to grow and contribute fully, and visitors are included and respected as they explore the history and heritage of the Army.
Our role
As a national museum created by Royal Charter, the National Army Museum has a responsibility to care for the collections and stories entrusted to it. The Museum is committed to public benefit, access and transparency, ensuring that the history and heritage of the Army can be explored now and in the future.
