Cargo drop engineering challenge

School children testing out their parachutes

Work against the clock and with limited resources to design and build a device to safely deliver cargo to your troops.

Can you get supplies to soldiers in the field using your knowledge of forces and engineering skills?

Explore how forces of motion act on falling objects, and put your skills and knowledge to the test with our cargo drop challenge.

Inspired by the history of air transport in the Second World War, learners will work in teams to design and construct their own airborne cargo delivery system before heading to our drop zone to test them out. Teams will need to balance their budget while also ensuring that their fragile cargo survives the 8-metre drop.

This session is 60 minutes long and includes:

  • Scientific enquiry
  • Group discussion
  • Team working
  • Historic photographs
  • Gallery visit and trails (optional)

Curriculum areas:

  • Science
  • Maths
