Foe to Friend: Virtual Tour

Discover how the British Army’s relationship with the German people has evolved over 75 years in this virtual guided tour of our special exhibition.

Enemies. Occupiers. Defenders. Allies. Friends. The relationship between the British Army and the German people has completely transformed over the last 75 years of British deployment in Germany.

The changing nature of this relationship is at the heart of our exhibition ‘Foe to Friend: The British Army in Germany since 1945’.

In this special virtual tour, the exhibition’s lead curator, Dr Peter Johnston, will talk you through some of the key objects which illustrate this story.

Discover how early post-war tensions between the British occupiers and the German public started to evolve as the Cold War began to dominate the political scene. Learn how British soldiers gradually became more integrated into local German communities. And hear how the withdrawal of British forces from Germany has impacted the local area in more recent times.

The tour will be available to watch on this page from 12pm (noon) on Thursday 21 January. It will last approximately 13 minutes and will be followed by a live Q&A session with Dr Peter Johnston.
