Drawing and Oil Painting Course

A paintbrush and palette

Develop your fine art skills with this two-day still-life course led by experts from London Fine Art Studios.

The National Army Museum houses a collection of fantastic Victorian artworks. These detailed paintings often depict military action, but they are also filled with detailed portrayals of the sorts of objects and equipment that soldiers would have worn and carried. Often, these objects are full of symbolism.

In this two-day course, join Ann Witheridge and Toby Gawler of London Fine Art Studios as they guide you through making a study of a Victorian-themed military still life, inspired by the Museum’s collection.

This workshop is suitable for all abilities and will cover skills such as drawing and composition, understanding lights and darks, using full-colour pastel drawing or oil painting. Artists with more experience will be able to bring their own oils along.

Schedule

Day 1 – Saturday, 29 April 2023

10.00am – 4.30pm

The course will begin with a short introduction from one of the National Army Museum’s art curators, who will highlight the importance of military art with examples from the collection.

After the introduction you will begin to learn about understanding design and composition with line and values (lights and darks). You will then move on to charcoal drawing and drawing on toned paper in sanguine, highlighted with chalk.

There will be a one-hour break for lunch.

Day 2 – Sunday, 30 April 2023

10.00am – 4.30pm

On Day 2, you will be moving into colour with a choice of oils or pastels. You will explore colour harmony and colour contrasts to help add impact to your still life.

There will be a one-hour break for lunch.
