First World War
By the end of 1914 the Western Front had frozen into trench warfare from the Swiss border to the English Channel. After a series of unsuccessful attempts to break the stalemate in 1915, a new plan was developed for a ‘Big Push’ on the River Somme in northern France.
This video examines the surprising and diverse range of soldiers from all over the Empire, Commonwealth and Dominions who contributed to the British First World War effort on the Western Front.
