British Civil Wars: Pikemen, cavalrymen and musketeers (virtual)

‘News’. Horsemen of the New Model Army, c1645

Explore Civil War battle tactics, weaponry and equipment to consider the experience of warfare in the 17th century.

What does our soldiers’ equipment tell us about 17th-century warfare?

Discover the causes of the civil wars, the distinctions between land and siege warfare, and the different soldiers of the Parliamentarian and Royalist forces.

In this virtual workshop, learners will explore the causes and outcome of the British Civil Wars through a filmed gallery tour showcasing key artefacts. Next, through a filmed demonstration of weaponry and uniforms, learners will examine the battle experiences of pikemen, cavalrymen and musketeers and the development of professional soldiery, instigated by the founding of the New Model Army.

Learners will then conduct further research into the experiences of soldiers using images of museum sources and present their findings to their peers.
