Christmas Truce cartoon family workshop

Children taking part in a creative writing workshop
Learn how to create your own drawing of the 1914 Christmas Truce, inspired by First World War cartoons in our collection.

Captain Bruce Bairnsfather was a British soldier who drew cartoons to pass the time in the trenches. His work was published weekly during the First World War and he eventually received a War Office appointment to create cartoons for other Allied forces.

In 1914, Bairnsfather was one of hundreds of soldiers who took part in an unofficial Christmas truce. Men from both sides left their trenches, exchanged stories and gifts, and even played football.

Use Bairnsfather’s cartoons as inspiration for your own drawing of the Christmas Truce. An artist will be on hand to provide handy tips and tricks.

Sessions run from 11am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm.

Recommended for ages 6+. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Collect a free ticket from the Welcome Desk. Places are limited and available on a first come first served basis.
